AZ to play for baseball National Championship; Rain Delay In Omaha

Posted: Updated:

There's still no winner in the College World Series after Coastal Carolina and Arizona were postponed by rain and lightning. The third and deciding game of the finals is now slated for Thursday in Omaha. First pitch is set for 10:08 a.m. Tucson time.

The winner-take-all game in a best-of-three series in the College World Series has the Wildcats of Arizona and Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina clashing for a third and final time to wrap the 2016 NCAA baseball season up.

Though neither teams were expected, nor considered, to be a part of the eight-team World Series bracket, Arizona and Coastal Carolina have both surpassed the expectations of many people across the country.

Predicted to finish ninth in the Pac-12, the Wildcats and first-year head coach Jay Johnson surprised many by placing third in the regular season standings, reaching a spot better than expected. With their momentum following them into the postseason, the Wildcats caught on fire at the right time.

Arizona swept through the Regionals and Super Regionals, as well as making it through the World Series bracket despite one stumble up to Oklahoma State. Yet, the Wildcats prevailed in two victories in their second and third bouts between each other, landing Arizona a spot in the final series.

In Game 1, the Wildcats flexed their muscles on Coastal Carolina behind the pitching gem of JC Cloney, winning 3-0.

In Game 2, it was Coastal Carolina’s closer Mike Morrison who stepped up for the Chanticleers and shut down the offense of the Wildcats, landing Coastal Carolina a 5-4 victory, despite a late rally by Arizona.

Despite momentum going for both sides, Game 3 will decide whose dreams will come true with a National Championship in the loom, but for Bobby Dalbec and the Wildcats, they will look to round out a historic postseason for Arizona, with a championship.
