PHOENIX (AP) - Hundreds of people, many wearing orange and holding signs, are gathering at the state Capitol in Phoenix as a march against gun violence got underway. Two of the high school students who organized the March For Our Lives rally opened the event by urging young people to register to vote and boot out officeholders who won't act. About two dozen counter-protesters arrived before the start of the rally.
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Military bases in Arizona, Florida and Missouri are being studied by the Air Force along with one in Texas already identified as the preferred location for basing an Air Force Reserve squadron of 24 F-35 fighters. A notice published Wednesday in the Federal Register says Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base is the preferred alternative and that the "reasonable alternatives" being studied for environmental suitability are Davis-Monthan, Homestead and Whiteman Air Force bases.
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers say they have arrested a 21-year-old American man on suspicion of trying to smuggle more than eight pounds (3.6 kilograms) of methamphetamine from Mexico into the United States with the drugs wrapped around his torso. Custom officers at a pedestrian crossing at the San Luis crossing in Arizona found the drugs on Thursday after they were detected by a police dog.
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - A team of Flagstaff biologists have collected roadkill to determine if supplementing the food supply of golden eagles during the winter could help boost egg production among breeding pairs. The Arizona Daily Sun reports the team collected nearly 70 deer and elk that had been hit on area highways for three months this winter and delivered the carcasses to nine breeding areas across the Babbitt Ranches in northern Arizona.
