New drought stats paint a bleak picture for Arizona

Posted: Updated:
TUCSON -

A lot of Arizona is in drought and El Nino did not provide much relief this year.

New drought stats paint a bleak picture for the Grand Canyon State. Over half of Arizona is under moderate drought status.

Three months ago, moderate drought covered about 16 percent of the state. It has jumped up to 67 percent.

A lot of the blame belongs to El Nino. The above average rainfall never materialized this past winter. As of Thursday, Tucson’s rain tally is running nearly a half inch below average. This is well off the pace of last year.

Arizona has been stuck at roughly 2 and a half inches of rain for nearly two months.

The only glimmer of hope is that Monsoon 2016 officially starts on June 15.
