Dozens of dogs will need homes as greyhound racing ends in AZ

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON - Governor Doug Ducey is expected to sign a bill in the next few days, ending dog racing in Arizona.  On Saturday, the Senate voted 28-0, passing it on to the Governor’s desk.

The new law would allow the Tucson Greyhound Park to continue collecting money from televised horse racing for two more years, but greyhound racing there would end at the close of 2016. Dozens, if not hundreds of dogs will need to be relocated.

Some groups, like Southern Arizona Greyhound Adoption, believe there may be 150 that will retire as pets. Many more race in Tucson, but not all will go up for adoption. Southern Arizona Greyhound Adoption says some will be sent to other tracks around the country, and other will be returned to their current owners.

Whatever the number, Arizona Greyhound Rescue is ready to start taking them in.

"Whenever our trainer calls us, we are going to be taking two at a time almost every weekend starting probably next weekend,” said Jean Williams, President of Arizona Greyhound Rescue.

That will last until racing ends on December 31st.

"So we're also looking for donations, for one thing because we have to vet these animals, and then we're looking for foster homes so they can lean how to be a pet, and then adoptions,” said Willams.

Of the newly unemployed greyhounds, a few are being hand selected to become service dogs with the program ‘Heartfelt Hounds.’

"They're good for me, they do mobility, and also they are very loving, and soft, and they just want to cuddle with you,” said Williams. “ And it's very good for anxiety and PTSD."

When all the local greyhounds have homes, there will still be work for William’s group to do.  "We have connections in California that bring the dogs back from [Agua] Caliente tack in Mexico,” said Williams.

They also help re-home Whippets, Salukis and all other sighthounds
