What’s Driving You Crazy: Who Yields?

Posted: Updated:

Traffic signs are "what's driving you crazy" this week.

Greg asked "who yields? The rule says right on red may turn when intersection/traffic clears after a full stop. When a U-turner is in traffic waiting to make his turn he should not have to yield to the right-turner as he is in moving traffic. The U-turner should have the right of way I believe. Many times I see signs saying "u turn yields to right turn!!" The law is very unclear here."

According to the Pima County Sheriff's Department, in general if someone has a green light and is making a U-turn they have the right of the way. If there's a sign saying otherwise, that determines who should yield.

You'll see "U-turn yield to right turn" signs up where there are two conflicting turns that both have turn arrows. Pima County Department of Transportation tells me they are reviewing 12 intersections where this is the case.

They've already eliminated the right turn arrows and thus the signs at La Cholla and Orange Grove.
