Crime Trackers: Mom arrested for allegedly beating 10-year-old daughter with cowboy boot

TUCSON -

A Pima County mother has been arrested for child abuse. She is accused of repeatedly beating her daughter with the heel of a cowboy boot.

The daughter and three other siblings were taken to the Child Advocacy Center on Friday. The children were given a medical examination and a forensic interview.

“ It was excessive use of force,” Det. Jesus Rodriguez.

He said the mother, 31-year-old Maria Torres Robles, disciplined the 10-year-old for rough housing with her younger brother.

“She began striking her on the head with the boot," said Rodriguez. "The child went to cover up and that's when she was struck in the hand.”

The bruise on the child's hand was sustained about a month ago. The principal noticed it and brought it to the attention of the school resource officer, who notified the Pima County Sheriff's Department.

“The fact that it was an injury where a doctor wasn't quite sure whether it was a broken hand and it needed to be followed up with x-rays,“ said Rodriguez.

The hand was not found to be broken, but it was badly bruised.

The detective said the 10-year-old victim is okay considering the circumstances. However, the investigation revealed that this was not the first time the mother has reportedly used excessive force.

One of the children told detectives that they had enough. Authorities said the child videotaped the mother beating another sibling.

The Department of Children's Services was notified and all four children, ranging from ages 2 to 12 years old, were taken from the mother.

Rodriguez said parents need to step back and calm down.

“There's other ways to discipline a child. Separating or talking to them, but more importantly, getting yourself calm," he said. "Understandably it’s hard for a parent, but necessary. “

The detective said the Department of Children Services made an effort to keep all four children together. They were looking for a family member that would keep all of the children.
