What’s Driving You Crazy: Ajo Way

Posted: Updated:

Korn A. asked about Ajo Way, "They've been working on 5-mile segments for the past four years. Is that going to be done for all of the route?"

We'll start to see more activity on Ajo Way. There's an ongoing widening project east of Sells in San Isidro.

As part of that project, drivers will encounter lane closures and more restrictions between mileposts 124 and 129 in the coming weeks. Arizona Department of Transportation crews will conduct earthwork along the road.

There will be intermittent flagging operations to stop traffic about 15 miles east of Sells to allow construct to cross SR 86. ADOT anticipates the delays will be less than 15 minutes, and the dates and times are uncertain.

Another widening project was recently completed from Sells to Fresnal. That's as far west that ADOT has projects planned.

East of that section on Ajo Way, work is underway to widen the route from Valencia to Kinney. The area between Valencia & Sheridan will be expanded to four lanes, and Sheridan to Kinney will be upgraded to six lanes.

ADOT is also studying the five-and-a-half mile segment between that widening project and the I-19/Ajo Way traffic interchange project. They're looking to see what improvements will accommodate the future increase in traffic. There’s still no construction funding identified for it.
