Women are the fastest growing group of gun buyers in the nation

TUCSON -

We saw record gun sales last year. Experts say one reason for the increase is that there is a new buyer on the market. The number one fastest growing group of gun buyers is women, ages 25 to 55.

Dressed in pink from her nails to her tactical gear, Debbie Ferns is one of the best female shooters in the Southwest.

Also a firearms instructor with Babes with Bullets, Ferns travels around the country hosting three-day shooting camps exclusively for women.

"Ninety-five percent of our women are urban and suburban women, they're not rural women,” said Ferns. “They're veterinarians. They're lawyers. They're school teachers. They're ER nurses."

She said there was a big shift in mentality sometime around 2008.

Since then, women's interest in guns for sport and self defense has only continued to grow.

"You're a single mom with kids, you're the sole responsibility for their safety, and we have a huge number of single moms come through camp," said Ferns. "They know there's no guy to protect them."

Since 2004, Babes with Bullets has trained 5,000 women around the country.

The FBI keeps track of how many background checks are done nationwide. Last year, there were 23 million, up from 14 million five years ago.

The single highest day for background checks in history was this past Black Friday, with 185,345 checks. The day before Christmas Eve was also in the top 10, with 151,061 checks, meaning a lot of people likely got firearms for the holidays.
