Crime Trackers: Armed robber shoots clerk in Midtown

Posted: Updated:

A convenience store clerk was shot during an armed robbery in midtown Tucson on Tuesday.

According to Tucson Police, he has hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. The suspect is on the loose.

“It's a little scary and alarming,” said Ashley Spoonhunter.

Spoonhunter works near the Quik Mart on Alvernon Way. She and her co-workers frequent the store daily, so they know most of the clerks.

“These are hard working people trying to make a living," she said. "They should be able to return back to their families every day and every night whenever they get off, and not have to come to work to be shot because somebody steals from them.”

Details on the incident are limited at this time.

TPD said the armed robbery took place just before 3 a.m. on Tuesday.

TPD does not know if the suspect is a man or woman, but they did confirm the clerk was shot.

According to officials, the incident happened so quickly the victim was not able to provide much of a description.

TPD detectives are busy working leads and are reviewing the store's surveillance video.

“I hope they catch him soon so he's not going around robbing convenience stores and shooting people,” Spoonhunter said.

News 4 Tucson also learned that about 15 minutes prior to the shooting, the Quik Mart on East 22nd St. was also robbed at gunpoint.

TPD cannot say if the incidents are connected yet.

The stores are less than five miles apart, which is an 11-minute drive time between the two locations.

News 4 Tucson  made several calls to Quik Mart and left several messages. So far, no calls have been returned.

Some police officers said it is extremely important to find this person. The suspect has already proven to be violent. Officers fear that violence could escalate even more.
