Jury selection starts in Brian Terry murder trial

Posted: Updated:

Jury selection started Tuesday in the trial for the killing of U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry.

The two defendants, Ivan Soto Barraza and Jesus Leonel Sanchez, are two of the seven men accused of gunning down Terry near Rio Rico in 2010.

Investigators say they were members of a "rip-off" crew that had planned to rob marijuana smugglers.  Instead, they got into a shootout with Terry and several other agents.

Opening statements are expected to begin on Wednesday.

A federal judge ruled last week that no testimony about the federal government’s Fast and Furious Operation will be allowed during the trial.

Terry's killing exposed the operation that allowed criminals to buy guns so agents could track them to traffickers across the border.  Two of the guns found at Terry's murder scene were tied to the gun walking operation.
