Hittin' the Trails 4 You: Storms close pair of campgrounds in the Chiricahua Mountains.

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON - Two popular recreation sites on the Douglas Ranger District of the Coronado National Forest will be closed through the duration of the Monsoon.

Now through September 30th, the Sunny Flat and Stewart Campgrounds are temporarily closed.

The areas are closed to provide for the health and safety of the public by avoiding potential flooding in the recreation sites. Closing the sites until the flood risk has subsided will prevent visitors from being exposed to flooding or flash flooding resulting from rain events further up in the canyon.

Alternative recreation sites on the Douglas Ranger District are currently open. Drinking water and electricity are not available at the sites.  Accessibility is dependent on weather, conditions may change.

On the west side of the Chiricahuas, Sycamore Campground can be reached on National Forest System Road (NFSR) 41. The campground is located at 6,200 feet in elevation, with eight camp sites which can accommodate tents or trailers up to 16 feet in length.

Rustler Park Campground can be reached by NFSR 42 from the west side of the mountains. At 8,500 feet in elevation, 22 campsites can accommodate tents or trailers up to 22 feet in length.

In addition to increasing the potential for flooding, recent monsoon storms have affected road conditions on the district. While road access can change rapidly with changing weather, current road conditions are as follows:

- Forest Road 42 is now open between the visitor center and Portal, and Stewart Bridge.

- Vehicle access to Rucker is only recommended for high clearance vehicles.

For further information please contact the Douglas Ranger District Office at (520) 364-3468 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays.
