TUCSON - Sun Link reached a major benchmark on Thursday, May 21.

The streetcar, which began transporting riders on July 25, reached its millionth boarding passenger Thursday afternoon, 44 days ahead of their projected ridership numbers.

UA student, Anna Bjornsen, was the lucky millionth rider. When she boarded the streetcar, she was greeted by Mayor Jonathan Rothschild and Sun Link dignitaries according to the city of Tucson.

"The one millionth passenger trip marks a significant milestone for Sun Link," said Mayor Rothschild. "Less than a year after launch, the people of Tucson have made the streetcar a popular mode of transportation, and the streetcar has helped to make downtown a success - spurring economic development all along the line."

For being the millionth streetcar rider, Bjornsen received an annual Sun-Go pass, which allows unlimited use on the Sun Link streetcar, Sun Tran bus system and select Sun Shuttle routes. Bjornsen is a regular Sun Link rider who uses it to get her to the University of Arizona.

Other passengers that witnessed Sun Link's millionth rider commemoration received Sun Link memorabilia.
