Investigative reporter Matthew Schwartz joined News 4 in April 2013. He brings 30 years of reporting experience to the Old Pueblo, including 20 years at one station in the New York market. Matthew has won more than 200 awards for reporting and writing, including four New York Emmys and Edward R. Murrow Awards for investigative reporting in 2018, 2017, 2016 and 2014.
Matthew has been an investigative reporter since 1993, in New York and Tampa. Among his memorable stories: A prison interview with "Son of Sam" serial killer David Berkowitz; the four trials of reputed mobster John Gotti; reports on the 9/11 attacks from Ground Zero; the crash two months later of American Airlines flight 587 in Queens, N.Y.; the bombing of Pam Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland; and hundreds of stories on corruption, fraud and government waste. Matthew has confronted countless suspects and con artists. After his reporting broke up a large ring of illegal fortune tellers, the father of one of the accused went after Matthew by swinging a baseball bat at his head! He missed.
Matthew also has a history of helping consumers. He went undercover to catch the owner and managers of a major car dealership driving new cars to and from work, then setting back the odometers before selling them to unwitting buyers. He did a series on pets dying and being mistreated in airplane cargo holds; the series led to a new law signed by President Clinton making air travel safer for pets.
Matthew was also the Chief Political Correspondent at his New York station before becoming an investigative reporter. In that role, he traveled extensively to cover political campaigns, including the 1996 party conventions in San Diego and Chicago. He has interviewed five presidents along the way.
Matthew is a native of River Edge, N.J., and a graduate of Ohio University, where he majored in journalism.
