YUMA, Ariz. (AP) - A federal jury has convicted a Yuma couple of participating in a loan kickback scheme that helped lead to the collapse of a local credit union.
The jury in Phoenix found William Liddle guilty of 54 counts, including conspiracy and multiple counts of credit institution fraud on Friday. His wife Rhonda Liddle was convicted on 36 counts.
William Liddle was the vice president of business lending for AEA Federal Credit Union. Prosecutors say he conspired with Yuma businessman Frank Ruiz to get suspicious business loans approved in exchange for almost $1 million in kickbacks.
Ruiz pleaded guilty in a deal with prosecutors and testified against the Liddles.
The Yuma Sun says sentencing for the Liddles has been set for May 21. Ruiz is to be sentenced next month.
