Woman sentenced after admitting to poisoning boyfriend's family

TUCSON - A Tucson woman who admitted to trying to poison her boyfriend's family in 2011 has pleaded guilty but insane, and was sentenced today to serve 10 years at Arizona State Hospital.

Tina Beerens admitted to trying to poison her boyfriend's family in August of 2011, after her boyfriend's mother confronted her about the bottle of pest control poison she was seen carrying.

Beerens' boyfriend and the Johnson family survived the poisoning, but some did receive nerve damage, and all were emotionally affected by the incident.

Tina Beerens was found incompetent to stand trial last year, and was referred to the Pima County Competency Restoration Program.

Earlier this year, Beerens pleaded guilty except insane to one count of "adding poison or other harmful substance to food, drink or medicine" and one count of "attempted first degree murder/ domestic violence." Today, she was sentenced to serve 10 years at Arizona State Hospital.
