PHOENIX (AP) - A woman testifying at a racial profiling trial against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his department says that during an unjustified traffic stop a deputy slammed her stomach-first into her car while she was five months pregnant.
Lorena Escamilla, who is Hispanic, said Thursday she was pulled over and mistreated in 2009.
Escamilla says she was cited for driving without proof of insurance and released, though she disputed the ticket.
She says the baby was born healthy and that she tried to lodge a complaint with Arpaio's office shortly after the stop, but got nowhere.
Arpaio's lawyers raised skepticism about her characterization of the encounter. The officer who pulled over Escamilla hasn't testified.
Arpaio denies the racial profiling allegations.
