Editor's note: The following is a release from the Pima County Sheriff's Department:
On April 27, 2013, at 6:35 a.m., deputies with the Pima County Sheriff's Department Rincon District responded to the Safeway at 4752 E. Sunrise Dr. reference an attempted robbery.
Upon arrival, deputies made contact with the victim, an 89 year old female who was walking back to her car after shopping when she was approached by a male outside of the store asking for money.
When she refused to give him money the unknown male reached out and tried to grab her purse. She was able to hold on tight to her purse and in doing so she fell back and hit her head on the ground, causing an injury. A witness standing nearby saw this happening and yelled out to the suspect who ran to his car and drove away.
The victim was able to give a vague description of the assailant and described the suspect as a male with a light complexion wearing a grey hooded sweat shirt and sunglasses. Deputies also learned that the suspect drove away in a vehicle that was reported stolen. The vehicle was later located and video surveillance showed two males associated with the stolen vehicle entering a convenience store.
Surveillance video shows a male subject matching the description of the suspect. The suspect appears to be in his early twenties, wearing a grey hooded sweat shirt with a black shirt underneath, a black hat and was carrying a back pack. The second suspect appears to be a white male in his early twenties, wearing a black and grey flannel shirt with a red and white baseball cap.
Detectives from the Sheriff's Department Robbery Assault Unit are investigating this incident and are asking the public for any information on the possible identity of the suspects. If you have any information pleases call 9-1-1 or 88-CRIME.
