WILLCOX - Willcox Historic Theater is celebrating the re-opening in grand style. A full of weekend of festivities is planned as the Willcox Historic Theater celebrates both its 76th anniversary and its grand re-opening early next month.
The Theater is now open "after being dark for more than a year, and once again is the center for community activities on historic Railroad Avenue, just as it was when the Art Deco Theater was first opened in 1937," said WHTP Board Member Terry Rowden.
WHTP's mission "is to revive the historic theater as an entertainment and cultural hub for Northern Cochise County communities by providing a venue for performing and cinematic arts; fostering the growth of community arts groups; targeting participation of youth, collaborating with other groups to provide programming opportunities," says Rowden.
The festivities begin at 7 p.m., on Friday, Feb. 1, with the showing of the 1936 hit movie "The Gorgeous Hussy," which played when the Theater opened in 1937, Rowden said.
"Set in the 1840s and starring Robert Taylor, Joan Crawford, and James Stewart at the beginning of their careers, this was the only ‘costume' film Joan Crawford ever made," she said.
Rowden said that anyone attending Friday's re-showing of the movie wearing 1930s' period clothing will get in for 1930s prices - 35 cents.those who would like to volunteer can call (520) 766-3334 to make arrangements.
"There's a spot for volunteers of every interest and it all helps the theater." Anyone interested can download and complete the volunteer application at www.willcoxtheater.com
