TUCSON - Hallie Wilson saved the day three times on Saturday, leading the Arizona Wildcats to the NCAA Regional Championship. Wilson, the UofA first baseman, had two home runs for six RBI's, including the go-ahead scores in the 5th inning.
But no play was more important than the finale. Leading LSU by a single run, Wilson snagged a bit of a wild throw from third baseman Lauren Young, tapped first base and fired back to Kellie Fox at third for a 5-3-6 double play that ended the game. LSU's Sandra Simmons, who was thrown out at third, represented the tying run.
"LSU just kept throwing the punches, and we kept responding. The way we respond, as a team, is what got us here," said Arizona coach Mike Candrea."The thing about our team is that we are not full of superstars," said Wilson. "Our team is full of the girls that got kicked to the curb and have had to come right back. We're those girls.
"We're fighters and we are always ready for what's ahead, and we want it."
Arizona will meet LSU again in Sunday's regional final. The Tigers held off Boston U on Saturday evening, earning a spot in the championship. If the Tigers beat the Wildcats at 1:30pm, there will be a winner-take-all game two.
"I'm just focusing on rest, lots of water, stretching, ice cold baths and just trying to stay healthy for our next task ahead," said senior Estela Pinon.
