TUCSON- A University of Arizona graduate is the mastermind behind the stadium for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, and it's not his first time going global.
Architect Michael Halchak is internationally known for his work on nine different Olympic Games.
"What is very unique about Olympic stadiums is that they do require all of the components for opening and closing ceremonies which are very demanding."
They are demands he and his team exceeded. The Olympic stadium provided the perfect setting for opening ceremonies. The best part he says is the sustainability of the structure.
"One of the main characteristics of this stadium is that it is purpose built for athletics but it also has the ability to downsize after the games from 80,000 seats to 25,000 seats. So it provides a very good legacy for London," said Halchak.
He and his team at design firm Populous already have bids in for future Olympic Games. They just finished preliminary studies in Qatar, offering possible insight into future Olympic locations.
