MARANA - The motorcyclist who walked away from a collision on Interstate 10 Wednesday night is still eluding authorities.
The man is still alive, a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety said, but his whereabouts are still officially unknown.
So how do officers still know he survived the collision?
DPS spokesman Raul Molina says the man made a call from someone's phone about an hour-and-a-half after the collision. He was about 2 miles from the scene of the accident. Molina says the man somehow walked away after the call.
An exhaustive 6-hour search in the area involved draining nearby canals and rescue dogs. Fragments of the motorcycle were strewn across the freeway but there was no sign of the man.
Hospitals and truck stops in the region were alerted to watch for anyone requesting medical assistance for injuries consistent with a motorcycle accident.
Molina said the man was swerving in and out of traffic when he collided with a car just before 10 p.m. Wednesday.
