PHOENIX (AP) - Sen. Jim Waring has resigned from the state Legislature to focus on his bid for Congress.
Waring announced his resignation on the Senate floor Thursday and said it would be effective at the end of the day.
Waring is a Republican from Phoenix. He is the second Senator to resign this week to seek the U.S. House seat being vacated by Rep. John Shadegg, R-Ariz., who is retiring.
Pam Gorman of Anthem resigned from the Senate on Monday to seek the same seat. Waring and Gorman face at least two other Republicans interested in representing the 3rd Congressional District. Rep. Sam Crump of Anthem and Paradise Valley Mayor Vernon Parker have said they will run.
The only Democrat in the race so far is Phoenix lawyer and businessman John Hulburd.
