Vote sought on proposed grocery store walkout

PHOENIX (AP) - Some grocery workers at Fry's and Safeway oppose a potential strike that could begin Friday night.

Several hundred workers showed up at Phoenix's Steele Indian School Park Tuesday night to voice opposition to a job action their union has called against the two companies.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 99 has given Fry's and Safeway until Friday night to submit a contract proposal acceptable to the union or face a walkout by its 25,000 members.

Those who rallied Tuesday night were asked to sign petitions asking the union for a new vote by members on the companies' latest contract proposal.

The union has resisted, calling it a tactic to postpone a strike until after the holiday shopping season.

The food workers' union has scheduled a meeting Wednesday evening to begin gearing up for a strike.
