TUCSON - Visit Tucson targets cold weather cities with warm ad campaigns.
The slogan on Visit Tucson's website reads Free Yourself in Tucson and winter visitors like Leslie Lind is doing just that. Visiting Tucson from New Jersey she is just happy to be missing the most recent snow storm to hit the east coast.
"There is rain on top of the snow and ice. I've had lots of calls about how lucky I am to be in Tucson and how do I time it so well," says Lind.
Visit Tucson takes advantage of these cold snaps with ads that promote our beautiful weather and events that come along with it. Tim Vimmerstedt with Visit Tucson says they recently sent out what they call an e-blast to reach over 200,000 residents in the Northeast and Northwest dealing with winter weather.
As people dream of a warm vacation Visit Tucson is there to reel them in. In fact, VisitTucson.org's unique traffic has increased 27% from this year to last.
"Last December we saw about 74,000 unique visitors and this year we're over 108,000. So we're definitely seeing an increase in interest to the destination," explains Vimmerstedt.
Local businesses and resorts are also seeing an increase interest. The Westin La Paloma is coming off a very busy January and Matt Brody with La Paloma says they are already having inquiries for next year.
Brody says, "When it's this cold especially back east we start getting calls about meetings for next year in warm climates like Tucson."
The hardest thing winter visitors have to do is head home to their chilly destinations but Brody says that is a good thing for business.
