FLORENCE - This Arizona execution has gained national attention.
The process left inmate, Joseph Wood, gasping, and snorting for more than an hour-and-a-half before he died on Wednesday.
The ACLU is calling for executions in Arizona to be suspended. wood was sentenced to death for the 1989 shooting deaths of his former girlfriend and her father in Tucson.
Joseph Wood is the 37th death row inmate to be executed in Arizona. As this state carried out the sentence people against the death penalty were outside the prison protesting and praying.
Ruth Zemej says, "I don't believe killing another person is going to bring any kind of peace."
Moments before Wood was to put to death the Arizona Supreme Court temporarily halted the execution and then proceeded.
Joseph wood was pronounced dead on Wednesday at 3:49 p.m. Prison Officials used a lethal injection that has been controversial in several executions.
Media Witnesses describe how Wood reacted to the deadly injection.
Phoenix anchor, Troy Hayden says, "it was very disturbing to watch. Joseph Wood is dead but it took him two hours to die."
The victim's family broke their silence after 25 years.
The daughter and sister of the victims, Jeanne Brown said, "what's excruciating is seeing your dad lying there in a pool of blood and and seeing your sister lying there in a pool of blood, that's excruciating.This man deserved it."
Her husband Richard says the last time he was that close to Wood was when he shot his sister in law.
"I saw the life go out of my sister in laws eyes right in front of me as he shot her to death. I'm so sick and tired of you guys blowing this drug stuff out of proportion. Because to me that's B-S," said Richard.
Wood's last words mentioned forgiveness, thanking people, and declaring he was at peace with his death.
"He wasn't sincere to the last minute when he turned around and smiled and laughed at us." said Jeanne.
There are 119 people on death row including two women.
