TUCSON- Twenty-nine years ago this month a little girl named Vicki Lynne Hoskinson captured Tucson's attention.
The eight year old was kidnapped and taken into the desert, where she was sexually assaulted and stabbed to death.
Friday night her family and dozens of other families joined together at Reid Park for the annual Homicide Survivors candlelight vigil.
"It's my first memory, I don't have memories prior to her kidnapping," says Vicki's cousin, Rebecca Fontenot.
Fontenot was six years old when Vicki went missing. It has been a very long time," Fontenot says. "Sometimes you wonder what she would be like, but at the same time you can't forget the fact that she was taken."
Every year Vicki Lynne's family attends the vigil, but this year's event comes at a tough time.
In just 10 days Vicki's convicted killer, Frank Jarvis Atwood, will head back to federal court to try to overturn his death sentence. "It's 29 years later and families have to go back to court to fight for justice that a court of our peers has already judged upon," Fontenot says.
But as difficult as another hearing will be, Fontenot says Vicki Lynne deserves justice and the family won't stop fighting for it. "She's a member of the family and that's the only thing we know to do," Fontenot says. "Any family member is worth it and you're going to fight no matter what."
Atwood is scheduled to appear in court on October 7th, 8th and 9th.
Vicki Lynne's family will be at the hearing, as well as News 4 Tucson.
