THREE POINTS - A 61-year-old woman is fighting for her life Thursday after being shot in the chest during a home invasion.

The woman was home alone in the 9000 Block of South Desert Well Road when the shooter broke in, Pima County Sheriff's spokesman Tom Peine said. It was unclear if there were additional suspects.

The woman was armed and shot back, Peine said. She called 911 but her neighbors found her first.

"It was in the middle of the afternoon and neighbors had heard the gunshots so it was obvious they came out to see if they could help," Peine said.

The woman was airlifted to University Medical Center where she remains in critical condition.
