Update on Sun Link Street Car project

TUCSON - The relocation and upgrading of underground utilities for the 3.9-mile Sun Link Streetcar project has concluded.

Approximately $9 million has been spent on upgrading and relocating utilities along the alignment.

Ninety-five percent of the project has rail installed. Impacts to traffic are minimal during completion of this operation.

Detailed information for construction during the week beginning June 16, 2013:
·On Monday, June 17, through Thursday, June 20, 2013 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night, green pavement marking and bicycle symbols will be installed along the roadway on Fourth Avenue, University Boulevard, Park Avenue and Second Street.
·Motorists and bicyclists should watch for lane restrictions within the immediate work area.
·On Tuesday, June 18 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. the existing traffic signals and foundations at the intersection of Stone Avenue and Broadway will be removed.
·A temporary 3-way stop will be in place while the new traffic signals are installed.
·During the week of June 17, 2013, installation will be completed and adjustments of the overhead contact wire along Congress Street from Toole Avenue to Granada Avenue will begin.


The work took longer than anticipated due to the complexity and age of the underground infrastructure.

Track installation is expected to conclude in July 2013. Final construction elements including poles, overhead wires, stops, and art will be completed by early October 2013.

Initially, the first vehicle was expected to be delivered to Tucson in February 2013; however, due to vehicle production delays it is now scheduled to arrive in August 2013. The revenue service date set for October 2013 will be delayed. All vehicles must be tested and accepted before beginning revenue service.

The streetcar vehicles have been delayed approximately six months due to longer production rates than originally anticipated.

The delayed production schedule has impacted the revenue service date of October 2013, which will now be shifted to mid-2014 to accommodate the arrival of all eight vehicles and completion of testing and systems integrations.

As construction ends, a public outreach campaign will be launched to educate the public on how to safely travel on roadways with tracks and overhead wires.

The project continues to be under budget with the expectation to complete the project for approximately $180 million of the federally-approved budget of $196 million.
