TUCSON - A suicidal man was shot and killed Tuesday night by a Tucson Police officer after pulling out a weapon, spokeswoman Sgt. Maria Hawke said.
It all started when the man, 30-year-old Dustin Wermli, called 911 to report he felt suicidal. Officers responded to The Place at Edgewood Apartment in the 500 Block of North Harrison Road, where he was waiting outside, Sgt. Hawke said.
Wermli claimed to be a combat veteran suffering from post traumatic stress disorder and told the 6 officers that he was armed.
Officers spent about 15 minutes of talking to Wermli in an attempt to get him to surrender and not to touch his weapon, Hawke said.
It was when Wermli reached for his gun when officer Jayson Thompson shot him, Hawke said.
Officers started first aid until firefighters took Wermli to the hospital, where he eventually died.
