TUCSON - The University of Arizona will hold its 150th Commencement this Saturday, May 14.
UA President Ann Weaver Hart will confer degrees upon the 2014 graduating class, including bachelor's degrees, master's/specialist degrees, doctorates, juris doctor degrees, medical degrees and doctorates in pharmacy. The keynote address will be delivered by UA alumna Anna Maria Chávez, CEO of the Girl Scouts of the USA.
Anna Maria Chávez will also receive an honorary degree along with five other recipients: UA alumnus Fletcher McCusker, CEO of Sinfonía HealthCare Corp.; UA alumnus and three-time Tony Award-winning scenic designer Scott Pask; Grammy Award-winning classical guitarist David Russell; UA alumnus Terrence Valeski, vice chairman of T-Mobile in the Czech Republic; and Malcolm H. Wiener, a world-renowned historian and archaeologist.
Six Honors College students and a transfer student will be presented with awards. They are:
·Robert Logan Nugent Award - Emily Huang (business administration, mathematics and finance) and Kurt Mohty (physiology and mathematics)
·Merrill P. Freeman Medal - Jonathan Yamaguchi (biochemistry) and Rinku Skaria (physiology and business management)
·Robie Gold Medal - Colton Cray (management information systems, finance, entrepreneurship and operations management) and Rae Anne Martinez (molecular and cellular biology)
·Provost Award - Erica Bee (communication and marketing)
Turki Faisal Al Rasheed will receive the 2014 Alumni Achievement Award, which is given by the UA Alumni Association. Al Rasheed is founder and chairman of Golden Grass Inc., one of the largest agribusinesses in Saudi Arabia. He received his bachelor's degree in agricultural engineering from the UA in 1981, followed by master's and doctoral degrees from universities in Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom. Today, he is a prominent agribusiness leader and a champion of democratic processes and voting rights in the Middle East. As a UA alumnus, Al Rasheed actively represents the University in the Gulf region.
The commencement will be held at Arizona Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
