TUCSON - Tucson firefighters rescued two people trapped in a storm drain Saturday.
A passerby heard screaming from a storm drain and called 9-1-1.
Tucson Fire responded just after 10:30am near the intersection of Avenida de la Ventana and Calle Arizona.
Pima County Waste Water was also notified of the situation and responded to assist.
Firefighters determined the man and woman in their 30s were showing signs of heat related illness and used a circular saw to cut a metal security bar that prevented the gate from being opened.
The two patients stated that they had voluntarily entered the storm drain from the Rillito River but became disoriented and couldn't get out.
They had been in the drain for over 8 hours and were suffering from heat related illness after they were medically assessed.
Both were transported to a local hospital for further treatment
