TUSD names new superintendent

TUCSON - The Tucson Unified School District Governing Board has appointed Heliodoro Torres "H.T." Sanchez to be the next superintendent of TUSD.

The board voted 4-1 in a special Tuesday evening meeting to name Dr. Sanchez as superintendent to succeed Dr. John Pedicone, who announced his resignation in March. Board member Dr. Mark Stegeman had the dissenting vote.

Dr. Sanchez's appointment concludes a national search that took place over the past two months and attracted more than 65 applicants. Dr. Sanchez was the solo finalist for the position.

He comes to TUSD from Ector County Independent School District, based in Odessa, Texas, where he has served as interim superintendent, deputy superintendent and assistant superintendent since 2010.

"I hope this community supports the new superintendent," said TUSD Governing Board President Adelita Grijalva. Other board members echoed the sentiment, saying that the district must move forward.

Dr. Sanchez has worked in public education in Texas for 15 years. His administrator experience includes working as an elementary, middle and high school principal, as well as an executive director in instructional support services and director of bilingual/ESL services. Dr. Sanchez holds an Educational Doctorate (ED) from Texas A&M Commerce.

Dr. Sanchez's employment contract has not yet been finalized and will come before the board for approval. Dr. Pedicone will continue to lead the district in an interim capacity until Dr. Sanchez arrives. Dr. Pedicone has held the position of TUSD Superintendent since January 2011.
