TUCSON - More than 4,000 travelers and crew members, including some Tucsonans, are stranded on a cruise ship drifting in the Gulf of Mexico.

A fire in the engine room left the Carnival Triumph cruise ship stuck about 150 miles off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.

A tugboat is on its way to take the ship to a Mexican Port.

When the fire stalled the ship, the Carnival cruise line sent out automated phone calls to let folks back home know what had happened.

"Drew" is one Tucsonan who got one of those calls letting him and his wife know that his son David, along with David's girlfriend and her parents were all trapped aboard the ship.

The cruise is something they had been looking forward to for a few years now.

Without restrooms, and limited food, water and electricity, David told his father on the one phone call he could make that it was pretty bad at first.

"He's a tough kid and I'm sure he's going to do well but it's going to be probably at least midweek or toward the end of the week before they can get back here," Drew told News 4 Tucson.

The cruise line is planning on giving a full refund to travelers as well as taking care of transportation costs and giving discounts on any future cruises.
