TUCSON - A local business is raising money after a 27-year-old woman died in Croatia while on vacation.
Shanti Carlisi grew up in Patagonia and worked in Downtown restaurants for years before dying in a car accident last week.
Bringing her back home has made arrangements especially expensive.
Kade Mislinski owns The HUB and Playground. He worked with Carlisi for 6 years before hiring her as his family's fulltime nanny.
"She's part of the family," Mislinski said. "She was our best friend. She played right here with our son, and it's one of those things where you're talking to her and then gone. That was the feeling."
A distributor helped provide 300 bottles of wine that The HUB will sell for $40 each. All of the money will go to the family's fund.
Andrew Record is the restaurant's general manager and, like most of his employees, knew Carlisi well.
"It's a deeply personal project," Record said. "When we were trying to figure out ways to raise money for Shanti's family, the first idea was, ‘Hey, let's do what we do.'"
Sunday, from 4 p.m. until close, HUB's net proceeds, about 50% of each bill, will go to the fund. Mislinski will also match any donated tips his servers give.
"Everyone goes through a process their own way," Record said, "but it definitely helps with some closure for some of us."
Friday and Saturday night, starting at 8 p.m., The Playground will charge a $5 cover, with all the money going to the family.
