Tucson's gem shows bring in big bucks

TUCSON - The Tucson gem shows continue to show their sparkle to the community.

Just released numbers show direct spending was up 20% in 2014 over 2007, the last time an impact study was done.

The 2014 direct spending comes in at $120 million. In 2007 that number was $100 million.

Breaking down the spending further:

Daily Spending
? $394 in 2014, up from $259 in 2007, +52%
? 34% spent $300+ per day in 2014, up from 24% in 2007
? Average per trip expenditure = $2,731 in 2014, up from $1,878 in
2007, +45%
? 26% spent $3,000 or more on their Tucson Gem Show trips in 2014,
up from 16% in 2007

On-Site Purchases
? 70% of international buyers spent $1,000+ in on-site purchases
(48% spent $5,000+)
? 47% of out-of-town buyers spent $1,000+ in on-site purchases
? 14% of local buyers spent $1,000+ in on-site purchases
? 88% of buyers interviewed purchased on site
? 15% of all buyers spent $5,000+ in 2014, up from 5% in 2007

The main shows happen at the Tucson Convention Center, other shows are held across the city and in Pima County.

Future show dates are January 31-February 15, 2015, January 30 - February 14, 2016 and January 28 - February 12, 2017.
