TUCSON - Tucson Police began a Violent Crime Initiative Friday night because of the recent increase in homicides around the city.
They will put 25 to 40 extra officers in high crime areas every night for the next month.
They say many of these crimes are related to drugs, gang activity, and home invasions, making that the focus of their efforts.
Tucson Assistant Police Chief Brett Klein hopes their presence makes a difference.
"With less resources on the street, we are not having the presence that we like to have. And with high crime areas, it is officer presence that can deter crime," Klein said.
He said after 30 days, they will re-assess the initiative to decide if they need to continue.
