TUCSON - The Tucson Police Department says they are reviewing details from Tuesday night's Ethnic Studies protests to see whether charges could be filed.
Tucson Police say they had officers on standby outside the board room Tuesday night, but were not asked to remove or arrest anyone protesting.
T.U.S.D. Board member Dr. Mark Stegeman says they just wanted things to end peacefully, which he says they did. But he says now they realize they should have had much more security.
"We've had heightened security at the meetings for several months, and the security last night was the same that it's been recently but that was a mistake. We needed to have more security last night than that, and we will have more in the future," Dr. Stegeman said.
But some board members, like Adelita Grijalva, supported the students' efforts to be heard.
"The students have made it very clear that we need to consider their voice, and we should," Grijalva said.
Meanwhile, TPD is working with the city prosecutor's office to determine if they will file charges.
"There are specific statutes about disturbing public meetings, there are statutes about disorderly conduct, and disruption of those types of meetings so those are some possibilities," Captain David Neri with TPD said.
Capain Neri says they plan to meet with T.U.S.D. this week to decide how to beef up security for the May 5th meeting.
