TUCSON - After more than 37 years, police have arrested a murder suspect in a cold case involving his dead girlfriend.
Bruce McCullough, 66, was detained in San Diego May 2 by Tucson detectives and San Diego Police. He is charged with murdering Donna Smith in 1976, Tucson Police spokeswoman Sgt. Maria Hawke said.
Smith was 20 years old when she was killed, McCullough was 28. Officers found Smith's body at her residence in the 1000 block of East Mossman on March 19, 1976. Detectives identified McCullough -- Smith's live-in boyfriend-- as a suspect in the murder.
The case went cold after numerous attempts to locate Mccullough, Hawke said. He was eventually found to be using a stolen identity and living in San Diego. Police were tipped off when McCullough used his real identity.
McCullough was arrested at his San Diego residence, where he sits in the San Diego jail waiting extradition to Arizona. Police notified the victim's mother, who live in Arizona, that the suspect in her daughter's death has been caught.
