TUCSON - Robert Park is speaking about his experience after being captured in North Korea.
Park snuck into North Korea in 2009. The government admitted they captured him. Park said he was tortured while in prison.
"It was worse than death for me," Park said. "I was prepared to die when I went to North Korea, but I wasn't prepared for what they would do. And it was just the most devastating thing of my life."
Park is suing the North Korean government, even though he realizes he will not get anything out of it.
"The whole purpose for that is just to apply pressure upon the U.S. government," Park said, "and also upon the international community and also upon North Korea."
Park said he has nightmares and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Friends and family have asked him to take a break from his activism.
"People want me to rest," Park said, "but I can't."
People in North Korea are suffering because of the government, according to Park.
"This is genocide," Park said. "This is crimes against humanity, and we have an obligation to intervene."
Previous reports said Park called North Korea worse than Nazi Germany. Those were false, according to Park.
"You cannot get worse than Nazi Germany," Park said. "That's impossible. What I could say is there are similarities to Nazi Germany."
There are illegal methods to get support to North Koreans, according to Park. He believes that is one of the best ways to solve their problems.
"Change is on the horizon," Park said, "if we could support these people, if we could get behind them, if we could empower the victims."
Park lives in South Korea. He does not visit the United States often, because he would rather use the time and money to help the Korean people.
"It will change," Park said. "I really believe that very strongly."
Park wants people to visit StopNKGenocide.com to help.
