Tucson man accused of kidnapping returned to Pima County

TUCSON - A man who fled to Mexico with an underage girl has returned to Pima County.

Todd Hezlitt, a former Altar Valley School District coach, was charged with sexual conduct with a minor and arrested in April.

In May he escaped to Mexico with then 15-year-old Brooke White, and failed to show up at a court hearing.

In July, the teenager made contact with her family and said she wanted to come home.
Shortly afterwards, Hezlitt was arrested by Mexican authorities and turned over to U.S. Marshals.

Pima County Jail officials say Hezlitt is currently being housed in a special mental health unit.

When he appeared in video court, the judge told him he was wanted on multiple charges from the Graham County Superior Court, including failure to pay child support.
He told the judge, "I was incarcerated at the time of that court hearing and that's why there was no communication at the time they had issued a bench warrant."

The judge told him Graham County will be given notice and that he was to speak to his public defender about it.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department worked tirelessly to find Hezlitt and White.

"We see that multiple agencies came together," said spokesman Tom Peine, "and it was a great cooperative effort that got Mr. Hezlitt into custody and back here to Pima County."

Hezlitt refused an interview and he is scheduled to back in court next week.
