Tucson Mall area hit hard by Monsoon storms

TUCSON - A monsoon storm caused major damage near the Tucson Mall Sunday.

It knocked down power poles, and caused massive power outages.

Some of the businesses at the mall lost power.

"Next thing you know it was completely pitch dark," Chris Kaufmann said, "like it was midnight in there."

Poles were down on Oracle and Wetmore Roads and Roger Road and 1st Avenue.

"It was pretty intense," Kaufmann said. "It was good times."

Trees covered the mall parking lot, and the storm also damaged Forever 21 and J. C. Penney.

Cars were stuck in a pool of water on Wetmore Road south of the mall.

Shane Kee works near there and saw one of the vehicles stall.

"People don't realize how deep that gets," Kee said. "We did the same thing not less than a week ago."

Many Tucsonans, including Kayla O'Connor, went to the Rillito River Park to watch the wash running.

"We don't usually get water very much," O'Connor said. "It's peaceful and cool."

Tucson Police closed River Road between Campbell and First Avenues because of a mudslide. At least one car got stuck.

Tucson firefighters had to rescue a driver stuck in a wash near Drexel and Mission Roads.

Marana Police closed the railroad underpass at Orange Grove Road and Interstate 10.
