TUCSON - Can you name the Tucson intersection where you're most likely to have a collision?
It's where Grant Rd. turns into Kolb Rd. at Tanque Verde Rd. The city says it was the top intersection for wrecks last year. It had 30 of them.
From his vantage point, working on the southwest corner of that intersection, Nick Hayes has seen a lot of close calls and accidents.
Hayes says the problem is especially bad during afternoon rush hour, when he says more people speed-up as the light changes to yellow, even though a red light camera is waiting to take their photo.
Traffic engineers say nationwide, most roads and intersections are incredibly safe, based on construction and signals. But, based on a lot of factors like congestion, some simply have higher crash rates than others. Which means it's up to you, the driver, to make them safer.
Farther south on Kolb Rd. at 22nd St., Clint Elliott works at a corner service station. He says drivers trying to avoid red light cameras elsewhere in the city are making this intersection more dangerous.
The intersection of 22nd St. and Kolb Rd. came in fifth place last year for numbers of crashes, with 24.
Clint says something needs to be done, sooner than later.
The deadliest intersection in recent years is not on the top 5 collision list. It's 22nd St. and Kino Parkway, where three people died in crashes back in 2008.
