TUCSON - Delaney Schnell (Tucson, Ariz.) became the first diver from the Tucson Diving Team to win a national title when she won the 12-13 girls platform gold medal Friday at the USA Diving Age Group National Championships at her home pool.
Ryan Tipton (Mansfield, Texas) won for the second day in a row, this time winning the 14-15 boys 3-meter title. Other winners Friday were Lottie Goddard (Livermore, Calif.) in 11-and-under girls 3-meter, Ivan Ip (Rosemead, Calif.) in 12-13 boys platform, Connor Kuremsky (Wexford, Pa.) in 16-18 boys 3-meter, Evan Labuda (Los Altos, Calif.) in 11-and-under boys platform, Samantha Lera (Kemah, Texas) in 16-18 girls 1-meter, and Larkin Papa (Southlake, Texas) in 14-15 girls 3-meter.
Schnell scored 305.35 points to win her gold medal, with Stanford Diving's Talbott Paulsen (Woodside, Calif.) finishing second with 266.30 points. Kyla Bradley (La Canada, Calif.) won bronze at 251.85.
Tipton, who won the 1-meter title Thursday, took top honors in the 3-meter contest with 357.60 points. Thomas Shinholser (Burtonsville, Md.) was second at 314.15, and Demetri Demet (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) was third at 297.75.
Lera narrowly edged out Christa Cabot (The Woodlands, Texas) for the 16-18 1-meter gold, scoring 355.10 points to Cabot's 354.55. Sydney Czaus (Los Alamitos, Calif.) took third with 352.00 points.
The 14-15 girls 3-meter contest was also a close one, with Papa winning by just more than one point. Papa finished with 336.40 points for gold, and Samantha Gallagher (Coto De Caza, Calif.) took silver at 335.15. Ashlynn Peters (Cypress, Texas) took home the bronze with 326.95 points.
Kuremsky won the boys 16-18 3-meter title by scoring 471.00 points. Sean Mokhtari (Houston, Texas) edged Sean O'Brien (Concord, Mass.) for silver, narrowly outscoring him, 448.55-447.35.
The Labuda brothers finished first and second in the 11-and-under boys platform contest, with Evan scoring 151.55 points for gold and twin brother Trevor taking the silver at 149.35. Anatoly Nazarov (San Ramon, Calif.) was third with 136.25 points.
Goddard came away with the 11-and-under 3-meter title with 191.40 points, and it was a close race in the battle for second and third. Michaela Dylag (The Woodlands, Texas) scored 183.60 points to pick up the silver, and Heather Yoshii (Mission Viejo, Calif.) was 0.35 points behind for bronze.
Ip scored 224.55 points for the 12-13 boys platform title, and silver went to Christopher Labella (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) at 197.60.
The USA Diving Age Group National Championships conclude Saturday at the Hillenbrand Aquatics Center.
