TUCSON - Memorial Day weekend is right around the corner, and you may have a trip planned, to Rocky Point, Mexico.
But a travel warning from the U.S. Consulate in Nogales, Sonora, is alerting U.S. citizens of security concerns.
According to the Consulate's website, there have been unconfirmed reports of unauthorized checkpoints at night. They are occurring on Hwy. 8 between the U.S./Mexico border and Rocky Point.
The advisory also says motorists who have not stopped at unofficial checkpoints have been shot at, some even killed. But again these are unconfirmed reports.
Eduardo Vivanco, owns and operates Rocky Point Rides. He says he's gone back and forth to Mexico since the warning was issued last week, and hasn't seen anything. He believes someone is deliberately putting out some false information.
Vivanco said, "I heard some organization is trying to boycott Mexico the same way Mexico is trying to boycott Arizona through SB 1070."
Nina Trasoff is scheduled to leave for Rocky Point on Tuesday to meet friends. "We've been traveling back and forth to Mexico for years and years, but this is very unsettling."
Norm Nelson is from Tucson, but also has a home in Rocky Point. He says, "I think it may be some misinformation because there's absolute no talk of it down here. And this is a town where news travels pretty quickly."
News 4 made several attempts to contact the U.S. Consulate in Nogales, Sonora, as well as the State Department in Washington D.C. to further explain the travel advisory, and the unconfirmed reports. No one returned our call.
