Tune in to News 4 Tucson, tonight at 7 p.m. to watch "Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together"

(NBC NEWS) - NBC is hosting a benefit concert tonight to help relief efforts for victims of Hurricane Sandy.

The one hour event, dubbed "Coming Together" will be hosted by Today Show anchor Matt Lauer at 7 p.m. Arizona time and will feature live performances by several singers with personal connections to some of the hardest hit areas.

"To see your hometown devastated like this, and people that I grew up with, my grammar school turned into a shelter. People's homes gone and them saying to me, we are now homeless," says New Jersey native Jon Bon Jovi. "People in other parts of our country feel that if they support us, they know that someday we're going to be supporting them. People come together in this time."

Bruce Springsteen, another native son of New Jersey, and Long Island's Billy Joel are also scheduled to perform tonight, along with the likes of Sting and Christina Aguilera.

Lauer, himself a New York native, suggested tonight's fundraiser to NBC executives after seeing devastation in Queens first hand.

Lauer got to cultivate his Today Show connections to stock tonight's roster of performers.

"To be able to pick up the phone and call the people who are appearing tonight and have them all say yes, it's one of the greatest things that's happened in my career," he says.

Tonight's goal is getting viewers to say "yes" to donations.

Money collected tonight will be donated to the American Red Cross relief efforts for Hurricane
Sandy.

The concert will air on NBC, as well as the cable networks of NBC Universal.

It will also air on Bruce Springsteen's E-Street Radio on Sirius/XM.
