AMADO - A 3-year-old boy is recovering after accidentally shooting himself. It happened Monday at the family's home in Amado, southeast of Green Valley.
The child was airlifted to UAMC's trauma center. The boy was shot in his upper-stomach. After surgery his condition was upgraded to stable.
A nightmare day for loved ones and neighbors. The Thompson's know the family well, they live down the road.
"It's a shock," says neighbor Bill Thompson.
"It was just awful, because we have two little grandkids," adds Gail Thompson. "One's four and one's two, and it just is heartbreaking."
Somehow the toddler got hold of a loaded hand gun and shot himself.
Deputy Tracy Suitt with the Pima County Sheriff's Department says, "the weapon is one that is inside the household."
So far, deputies are not releasing if his parents or siblings were home at the time. It happened around one, Monday afternoon.
Before learning it was a self-inflicted gunshot, both homicide and crimes against children detectives surrounded the rural home.
Deputy Suitt says it's unclear if the parents could face charges, the investigation continues.
"We always like to tell people, be careful with your weapons, and lock them up," said Suitt. "Keep them away from children."
Bill says, "Well it's a tragic thing, and it's something that unfortunately does happen."
Gail has this message for the family, "Well that everybody around here is pulling for him."
Deputies tell us the boy is expected to survive and recover.
