SIERRA VISTA - Incident officials at the Monument Fire say today "is considered a key day in suppression operations."
About 1,311 people are currently assigned to fight the 28,236-acre Monument Fire, which is now 59 percent contained.
Last night, crews continued aggressive burnout operations to widen the line north of Ramsey Canyon Road to the southern edge of the contained Garden Fire, which will reduce the risk of the Monument Fire spreading to residences in the area.
Bolstered by the successes of yesterday, and the favorable weather conditions, crews also hope to continue burnout operations along the southwestern side of the fire, with the help of aerial ignition. These firing operations are effective at minimizing the threat to residents, officials say.
