PHOENIX - Interstate 10 is likely looking a whole lot cleaner after state inmates filled 5,000 bags of trash during the first week of Operation Clean Sweep.

The governor's office said up to 100 inmates from three institutions stretched along 70 miles of roadway between Tucson and Phoenix completed litter removal along the westbound lanes of I-10 last week.

The inmates have since moved over to the eastbound lanes.

Arizona Department of Corrections Director Charles L. Ryan said the inmates are performing an important community service and at the same time saving the state money.

Ryan said for $300 a day, the highway is getting an extreme makeover.

Inmates will earn 50 cents per hour picking up trash.
