TUCSON - A house fire on the east side Thursday morning was caused by a woman smoking in bed, according to the Tucson Fire Department.
The blaze began just after 8 a.m. at a home in the 7200 block of East Freestone Drive, near Kolb and Escalante Roads, according to TFD spokesman Capt. Barrett Baker.
The first crew on scene reported heavy smoke coming from the front door, Baker said. The homeowner was trying to go back inside the burning home for her animals.
Firefighters assured her that they would do everything possible to get the animals out of the home safely, Baker added.
The crew inside the home put the fire out before finding the missing cat, Mongo, who was struggling because of the heavy smoke, Baker said. He was reunited with his owner and perked up after getting some fresh air and blow by oxygen.
The woman's dog, Dax, was also found without injuries.
