TUCSON-- A suspected carjacker and a TPD K-9 are dead after a midtown shooting. It happened near Speedway and Country Club at around 11:00 p.m. Wednesday.
TPD Sgt. Chris Widmer tells News 4 Tucson it all started when someone called 911 reporting that their car had been taken from them at gunpoint.
Officers spotted the vehicle near 5th and Alvernon, and activated their sirens. The suspect took off and plowed through the front yard of a home on North Treat Ave., stopping the car in an alley near 2nd Street and Stewart Ave. He took off running and multiple officers chased him, including a police dog.
The suspect then stopped in a front yard on 2nd St., where there was some kind of controntation between the man and police. Multiple shots were fired, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The K-9 was also shot and was taken to an emergency pet hospital where it later died.
Investigators are not giving any further details about how the man was shot. They're also not releasing his name at this time. No other officers were hurt in the incident.
